1 Chronicles

1 and 2 Chronicles according to The Bible Project are essentially a glossy version of 1 and 2 Kings, which I have already read.

The author of the Chronicles was a big fan of King David and some of his more questionable moments are not mentioned, take his encounter with Bathsheba, for example.

It reminds me a bit of when I have to write eulogies. I’m all for believing the best of people and seeing the good. But sometimes the people who listen to those eulogies say they just don’t describe the person they knew because the story is just too perfect!

So 1 Chronicles is quite a lot like the stories of David in Samuel and Kings. There is a lot of genealogy at the beginning. Again, the best way I find to read this is to speak the names aloud and giggle at my poor pronunciation, and my daughter’s confused face as I say words that sound like gobbledegook to her!

1 Chronicles ends with the passing of power from David to Solomon, many stories being ones found earlier in the Bible.

Sophia fell asleep twice as I was reading this aloud.

My favourite verse was 1 Chronicles 16.36: And all the people shouted “Amen!” and praised the Lord.
