On a Friday

For four years and five weeks, it’s been me and you on a Friday.

First there was breastfeeding support group, then there was Sweaty Mamas, then the Hub and Tappy Toes. Things we did on a Friday.

We’ve had hash browns, bacon rolls, teacakes, baby and cappuccinos, hot chocolate and toast, huge wedges of sandwich from the shop where the lady eventually knew your order. Tasty treats on a Friday!

Eventually, your brother arrived and you were gracious enough to share. He napped and he fed, tagging along with us and all we did on a Friday.

Building up to school, we were reading the menu and you were so excited for fish and chips to end every week. Today was your first full day, so off you skipped this morning, knowing what you’d pick for lunch this Friday.

This week is all new for Aidan, too, so of course, we enrolled him in Tappy Toes, just like you. We got there and he loved it! The music, the dancing, the bells and the pompoms, then the final song with the bubbles you loved. And it suddenly hit me: you’re somewhere else now on a Friday.

I’d prepped for this week. Imagined the feelings, got myself ready. First days, new uniforms, lunchboxes, wellies, new routines all prepared. But I forgot to think about Friday.

I’m so excited for your new adventure. For all it involves. I loved school and I hope you do too. I hope that you learn and I hope that you’re kind. I hope that you have as wonderful a time at school as I did. But after today, I also know I’ll always miss you most on a Friday.
