Obadiah

Another day, another prophet!

Well, what to say about the shortest book of the Old Testament?

Obadiah’s prophecy is about the coming judgement upon Edom and the Edomites (the people of Esau), and the restoration of Israel and the Israelites (the people of Jacob). Although the Edomites and Israelites go way, way back because Esau and Jacob were brothers, they had a tricky relationship which was echoed in their people down the centuries.

Lots of Biblical scholars would say that Obadiah was written just after the fall of Jerusalem. During this time, the Edomites did nothing to relieve the Israelite’s suffering, as they plundered cities and harmed Israelite refugees.

So, Obadiah was not impressed with the Edomites and was keen to emphasise that all such prideful nations will one day fall.

Towards the end of the book, Obadiah paints a hopeful picture of God restoring Jerusalem and then all nations. All evil will be dealt with and peace will come. Amen to that!

My favourite verse: Obadiah verse 21, the last bit: and the Kingdom shall be the Lord’s.
