Holy Week 2024: Maundy Thursday

6.40am Soph’s awake so the day needs to begin! She’s off to Nathan’s Mum and Dad’s and I’m doing toddler group, chair arranging, warm space, and a communion service.

10am It’s been a long morning already, but I’ve put some washing away while chatting to Mum and now I’m off to church.

11.30am Toddler group has been lovely and as it’s Easter, there’s cake! My appetite is non-existent but even I’ve managed to eat a little banana cake.

Now we need to rearrange the chairs for our service tonight. Two contemporary Christian dancers (Heavenly Fire Dance Theatre) are coming and we decided to rearrange the chairs so they are performing down the middle of church. I am in charge of directing where the chairs will go, but I’m under strict instructions not to move them myself.

12.20pm Wow, I really love church like this! Can we do it more often?!

1.40pm The railings ministry continues this year! I put an interactive prayer station on the railings last year and it worked really well, so here is this year’s effort:

2.30pm The Calvary Cavalry (Mum & Dad) are on their way! I’m so relieved.

3pm So that’s the last Warm Space session of the season over! We’ve been running a warm space for 6 months now, and our amazing volunteers have kept it going. It’s been great to offer the Hub as a warm place of welcome for people to come and get a bowl of soup.

The best bit about today, though, was that a couple of children and their Mums came across from school asking for hot chocolate! We hadn’t advertised, it wasn’t even the right day of the week, but they saw the lights were on and came in. How great is that! So, of course, we cracked open the hot chocolate, found the sprinkles and marshmallows and made them a drink.

4.45pm Mum and Dad are delayed, which is to be expected. So many people are on the move today! So I’ll pop some tea in the oven for Soph for when she gets back, take her to church and they can pick her up from there. I warmed up some chicken laksa noodles and even managed about 6 spoons full, which is more than I’ve eaten in one go in a good few days.

6.20pm The dancers, Hannah and Sarah, are getting set up, and Soph is on her way back home with Mum and Dad. I’m looking forward to tonight, but I’m nervous too! I know I’ll love it, but what about everybody else?

8.50pm Well, that went down so well! Everybody I spoke to enjoyed it. I was so moved by the performance, especially when they danced to a sung version of Psalm 23. Absolutely stunning.

We shared communion together, too, which is always a privilege but especially on the day when we’re remembering the Last Supper.

11pm I’m sat in the living room watching the Apprentice with Mum and Dad, doing a bit of crochet. It’s lovely. See you tomorrow x
