We’re almost at the end of your first year of school.
New for you, new for us, those routines and rules.
10 months and 4 days since we walked down the road.
Off on a learning adventure, yet to unfold.
‘Download the app, respond to messages quickly!’
Having lots to remember made me quite prickly!
Discos, chickenpox, a visit from the farm.
So much in this year, we’ve not had much calm.
Yesterday, you showed us workbooks, full of pride.
A transformation of letters and numbers inside.
Turns out as a Mum, I’m not too fussed about grades.
What they say about you as a person is what I most praise.
They say you’re kind, polite, always helping others.
It’s this that makes me most glad to be your mother!
Soon it will be summer, lots of people to see.
I hope we’ll find some time for just you and me.
We’re ending another season, we’re turning to year one,
A bit less play, more homework to be done.
Soon we’ll say to Reception, ‘thank you, goodbye!’
Let’s take the next step together, O apple of my eye.
