Sophia’s First Bible Study

I’ve been promising this one for a while, and here I am finally getting around to sharing a lovely little story with you from the last few weeks.

Recently, when Aidan was already asleep and I was settling Sophia, she asked ‘if babies come from Mummies and Daddies, who looked after the first babies?‘.

It was a well articulated chicken and egg, Adam and Eve, kind of question. Much as I hold to the teachings of Darwin, I made a snap decision that she was too young to comprehend evolution. I learned about Genesis first, and then evolution second, and I think my faith is all the richer for it. So I thought I’d start on the same path.

‘Well, the Bible has something interesting to say about this, shall we have a look?’

So we read through her toddler Bible about creation and how Adam and Eve were made last.

‘But how Mummy?’.

‘Okay, well this Bible give some more details. We read your Bible which is written for little children to understand, but this has more writing in it…’

I opened her full Bible, and started to read ‘In the beginning…’ and before long, she said ‘it says that in my one!’.

So I read a few verses, and she read a page of hers. And I read a few verses, and she read a page of hers. She like the bit in the big one where it said ‘and God saw that it was good!’ which wasn’t in hers. I would say ‘…and God saw that it was…’ point my finger at her, and she would say ‘GOOD!‘.

We did this a couple of nights in a row which led to Sophia dragging her Daddy out of bed one morning to ‘come and talk about Bibles over breakfast’. Adding Daddy’s translation in was even more exciting to Sophia, as bemused as he was to be reading aloud from Genesis before 7am!

So there we have it, Sophia’s first Bible study.
