Nahum

Remember Jonah getting grumpy that God was willing to save the city of Ninevah when they changed their ways? Here is somebody else’s take on Ninevah, Nahum. It’s not a very happy book, but then most prophecies aren’t, as we are learning! My

Ninevah was the capital of the Assyrian Empire and they were particularly brutal towards Israel. The people of Ninevah clearly had some issues! Like so many other prophets beforehand, Nahum warns of the consequences of Ninevah’s behaviour, and offers hope in salvation. This condemnation of Ninevah translates across the globe and down the centuries to any and every oppressive people. And therefore, it also brings hope to the oppressed!

My favourite verse, and it pretty much sums up the whole book: Nahum 1.7-8: The Lord is good,
    a refuge in times of trouble.
He cares for those who trust in him,
    but with an overwhelming flood
he will make an end of Nineveh;
    he will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness.
